20% Reduction On Household Heating Costs Available
16th June 2009
Recent research has shown that radiator cover grills can increase the efficiency of your home radiators by as much as 20%, helping to lower energy bills and reduce fuel consumption. At a time when all our heating bills are rising, an increasing number of us are looking at ways to lower our household bills. It has long been known that good insulation can help retain more of your home’s heat. But is that heat being circulated effectively? In many cases, it would seem not.
Although many people have had bespoke radiator covers made simply to improve the elegance and style of a home, it would now seem that there is much more to this elegance than might first meet the eye. Traditional, uncovered radiators, as the name might suggest, radiate heat. But the result of this is that a significant proportion of the heat rises to above where it is actually needed. As it cools, it falls, and so the overall temperature of the room at the level of people is far less than it is above their heads. The warmest place might be to sit on top of a radiator – but this is clearly neither practical nor comfortable!
Made to measure radiator cabinets can be built to fit exactly round your radiator, and take into account the shape of the room and any anomalies. A small gap at the base allows cooler air to be drawn in. Most home radiator covers have a grille front, often highly decorated fretwork, and the radiator cabinet forces the heated air out through these openings and directly into the room, at the most suitable height, turning the radiant heat into convective heat.
This means that the radiator’s heat is felt more immediately and more efficiently, allowing you to be able to reduce the amount of time it is switched on, and lowering your overall heating costs without having to lower the temperature. Whether you choose a simple plain white radiator cover to fit in unobtrusively with your existing decor, or a more fancy and elaborate model, the overall benefits will be far more than elegance. And as you enjoy your warm home you can even feel guilt-free knowing you’re doing your bit for the environment at the same time.
With around a 20% saving on energy bills for heating, most households will be looking at about £150 saving per year, which easily covers the cost of installation. With all of us under increasing pressure to help reduce fuel wastage, this is one way in which we can all help to contribute towards reducing our fuel consumption, whilst saving money at the same time.

Two Reasons Why Bespoke Radiator Cabinets Are More Cost Effective
6th June 2009
Bespoke radiator cabinets not only add a great deal of visual style and elegance to a home, but serve a very practical purpose too, one which could save money and help heat your home in a much more energy efficient way. Custom made radiator covers are always preferable to those which may be prefabricated, since they will be far more sturdy, last very much longer, and perform in a much more efficient way. A wooden radiator cabinet is subject to a great deal of heat, and in many cases a good deal of moisture as well. This places increased strain on the wood and the joints, which is why radiator cover grills made specially to order will perform far more effectively and provide years of elegance.
In days gone by almost every home would enjoy a traditional open fireplace around which the family would gather. From the point of view of interior design we would refer to this as being a focal point of the room. However, with more efficient central heating now available, in many cases the only focal point in evidence is the television! Being quite honest, traditional radiators don’t bring a great deal of beauty or elegance to a living space, and it’s no surprise that they become ignored.
But custom made radiator covers are not about covering up radiators or hiding them from view. Instead, it is about making them look more attractive, adding elegance and style, matching the decor of the room and helping to enhance the theme or mood which you, or your interior designer, is trying to achieve. Metal radiators can’t easily be painted or decorated without looking even worse, but a bespoke radiator cabinet can be made in such a way that the style or theme of your room is enhanced perfectly.
A wooden radiator cabinet can be stained, varnished or painted to blend in seamlessly to the room, immediately lifting the atmosphere and sense of completion. Nothing seems worse than spending all your time and effort redecorating a room only to find an ugly great slab of white metal clinging to your wall, sneering at your efforts elsewhere! Radiator cover grills can be crafted in a range of styles, with the vent holes available in various sizes and shapes. From diamonds to trefoils, from clovers to intricate renaissance style fretwork, the improvement is immediately apparent.
The top of a radiator can be a troublesome place, simultaneously able to gather a terrifying collection of dust and debris, whilst being wholly unsuitable for placing pictures or items of interest. Custom made radiator covers include a shelf which rests along the top, lifted up a couple of inches above the top of the radiator itself. This shelf both protects the radiator from gathering dust, as well as providing an ideal surface on which to place a few ornaments or pictures. Because the shelf is a little above the radiator, the heat should not affect the items placed on top. Bespoke radiator cabinets manage to achieve this perfectly, and if it is your intention to place items on top of the radiator cabinet then it will be particularly important to make sure that it has been custom made for this purpose.
But it is not just about the visual improvements to a room that people choose custom made radiator covers. A wooden radiator cabinet is able to make significant improvements in the way the radiator functions, enhancing its efficiency. This means that your rooms can be heated more efficiently, lowering heating costs quite dramatically. The saving in fuel alone may well negate the cost of the radiator cabinet itself in a few years.
How is this efficiency possible? Very simply the radiator cabinet turns the radiant heat of the radiator into convection heat, which is then directed into the room. Normally a radiator’s heat rises upwards, hitting the ceiling, cooling and then sinking again. However, a wooden radiator cabinet draws cool air in at the bottom, and then directs the heat forwards through the radiator cover grills and into the room. Far less heat is lost, and the heat that is generated is directed to where it is most needed.
When deciding to purchase a radiator cover or radiator cabinet it will be important to make sure that you choose one which will be ideally suited to the purpose and to your particular needs. No two houses are entirely the same, and there are always likely to be individual issues such as fabrics, furnishings, fixings and general use of the room which will impact on the suitability and effectiveness of your wooden radiator cabinet.
Custom made radiator covers take into account the exact dimensions of your room, the radiator, and the ways in which you need the radiator cabinet to be incorporated into the design of the room. Having the right bespoke radiator cabinet will make a massive difference in terms of interior decoration as well as heating efficiency.

Pair Turn the Heat Up
Wilmslow Express Business News - Thursday 19th March 2009
A mum and daughter are confident that the credit crunch won’t leave them out in the cold following the launch of their company, Kingston Cabinets, which designs and manufacturers bespoke radiator cabinets from its headquarters in Handforth, Cheshire.
Despite the recession, the pair believe now is the perfect time to start the venture as more people are choosing to improve rather than move, and they say there is a niche in the market to provide a quality tailor-made product that will enhance the interior style of any home.
Carolyn and Rebecca designed the range of classic and contemporary cabinets, which can be used in kitchens and bathrooms, and Kingston Cabinets’ entire range convects the heat of the radiator to ensure greater efficiency. Carolyn has vast experience in business. She began her career as a commercial engineer at nuclear power stations, has worked at senior management level in textile manufacturing and the motor trade, as well as owning a restaurant. In recent years she has worked in interim management at a number of companies.
Rebecca has a customer service and marketing background and, after having her first child two years ago, decided it was time to get back to work.
Carolyn said: “It is always a good time for a good business opportunity. We chose radiator cabinets as we want to be able to provide a personal service and a quality product while adding a touch of elegance and sophistication to people’s homes.
“More than ever in the current economic climate, we believe our customers are looking to invest in their homes in order to make them as stylish and comfortable as possible.”
Rebecca added: “As mother and daughter we have worked together previously and understand the highs and lows of working with family. Fortunately we have experienced many more highs than lows!”
Kingston Cabinets officially opens for business on March 14, and Rebecca says the company has already received a number of pre-orders.
